Do we need money to be happy?
The Happy Planet Index ranks countries' "happiness" based on life expectancy, ecological footprint and experienced well being, but we took things a step further by adding GDP PPP per capita, a close measure of average income, into the mix. So is it just a coincidence that only 12 of the 15 unhappiest countries in the world have average income of less than $15,000? Or that four of those countries don’t even break triple digits? They say money can’t buy happiness, but it can certainly buy comfort and security, without which the elusive concept of “happiness” may not even be possible.
On the other side of the coin, money certainly can’t buy bliss. Just look at Qatar and Luxembourg, two of the wealthiest (and unhappiest) countries on the planet. So what’s the real secret to happiness? Try asking these guys.
